Tay Martin Scouting Report

I think Martin’s speed is slightly above NFL average at best. Explosive athlete. Good burst especially while attacking the catch point. Decent route runner. Struggles with his release. Shows the ability to work the sideline extremely well.

Great footwork, routinely displays the ability to get both feet inbounds. Shows that along the sideline and in the back of the end zone. Solid hands. Shows a good catch radius. Struggled with consistency later in the season as he was banged up. Has the vertical ability to make big plays, especially in the red zone. Struggles to catch consistently through coverage. Does have the ability to corral catches that he’s losing track of. Does flash the ability to absorb contact while securing the catch. Played very tough and physically against Notre Dame particularly.

Not an ideal deep threat. Doesn’t offer too much of an ability after the catch. Shows strong run blocking ability. Despite his lack of frame, plays with remarkable tenacity in this area of his game. Consistently called to be the blocker on the perimeter.

What we want to see from Tay Martin in Las Vegas

  • We really want to see how Tay Martin deals with press coverage in 1v1’s, and get a better idea of his route-running ability overall. The Big 12 defenses overall played a lot of off coverage and tried to give Martin a lot of space to operate so that they could react better. As a result, he had a lot of freedom to do what he wanted. We want to see what Martin will do when he has to work through the route more.

Pre-Shrine Bowl projection

Tay Martin best projects as a blocking receiver at the next level, someone capable of playing both on the boundary and out of the slot and being a second option in an offense. He would start as a depth guy who could potentially step up as a replacement starter by year three.

We are a little bit concerned overall with Martin’s consistency catching. We think he’ll be drafted, but somewhere in the fifth/seventh-round range.
