Jalen Tolbert Scouting Report
Average speed. Has decent body control to change direction quickly and with little effort. Average acceleration, struggles to create separation. Average explosion. Good footwork and change of direction, especially on more advanced double move concepts. Not a particularly nuanced route-runner. Does manage to get the job done.
Decent release ability. Not very flexible. He’s had consistency issues with his hands most of his career, but has really taken a step forward to be more consistent in 2021. Showed better results in 2021 overall. Shows the ability to make highlight, circus catches. Still has concentration drop issues that leaves some reason for concern.
Flashes the ability to catch well through contact. Average deep threat ability. Struggles to create separation but has the ability to catch passes through tight coverage. Shows decent contact balance to oftentimes break first contact. Overall, pretty average in this regard. South Alabama wanted to use him in this capacity and he wasn’t quite up to the task. Not a particularly strong blocker on the perimeter. Struggles to read and react to his assignment.
What we want to see from Jalen Tolbert in Mobile
- We want to see Jalen Tolbert show some sort of ability to separate. In his case, it’s going to have to be through more advanced route-running, as we don’t believe that he has the speed to create a lot of space in Mobile. We want to see some progress from Tolbert as a more advanced and nuanced route runner.
Pre-Senior Bowl projection
Jalen Tolbert projects as a “project” prospect at the Z receiver position. With some work on mechanics and technique, the hope would be to get Tolbert to a position where he could potentially start in year three – but it’s going to take a lot of work. Tolbert might have to work from a practice squad and earn his way to an active roster spot.
It’s a very, very deep class at the receiver position. With Tolbert’s attempted usage as a gadget player, that was largely ineffective, and lack of separation, we project Tolbert falling into the seventh-round/PFA range in the 2022 class.
