Daniel Bellinger Scouting Report

Very middling speed and athleticism. Got a lot quicker between 2020 and 2021. Good upper body strength. Stout lower body, gets excellent drive. Excellent power, especially for his size. Acceleration is below average at the NFL level.

Not a particularly explosive athlete. Not a nuanced route runner. Struggles to win with any style, but will find soft spots in zone coverage or work open in an improvised situation. Ran a decent route tree, although mostly utilized as a blocker.

Very much a possession style receiver. Offers some vertical ability, but would be very limited in this role at the next level. Very consistent hands, doesn’t often drop footballs. Not particularly gifted with vertical ability. Shows the ability to catch well through contact. Decent pass blocker. Holds his edge against middle of the pack edge rushers and linebackers. Strong run blocker. Works well inline. Works very well into the second level. Strong technical blocker. Has the size to be very effective from his spot.

What we want to see from Daniel Bellinger in Mobile

  • Just how much of a mismatch can Bellinger create on a linebacker or a safety? In our modern, pass-happy NFL, this is a valuable question. Bellinger ran a lot of different types of routes at San Diego State, but wasn’t particularly nuanced in any of them. With the lack of athleticism that he brings, how much of an impact can he be in the passing game?

Pre-Senior Bowl projection

Daniel Bellinger is arguably the best blocking tight end prospect in this draft class. That means that Bellinger should aways have value in the NFL as a second tight end. His run blocking ability is very consistent and he’s a great impact blocker. His receiving ability, however limited it may be, can also be utilized in certain situations. He’s a good piece with a limited ceiling but a low risk.

We like Bellinger as a fifth/seventh-round prospect. He can fall a little bit behind in this class with the lack of athleticism, but he could be an impact blocker as soon as this year.
