Velus Jones Jr Scouting Report
Offers some excellent speed, looks like a low 4.4 player. Very quick. Twitchy and quick himself, Jones has great body control and several moves. Gets up to speed quickly. Accelerates very well. Explosive athlete. Excellent at the top of his break.
Seamless route runner through his cuts. Surprisingly ran a very limited route tree at Tennessee. Flashes a really nice release ability. Good hands. Became the number one target this season at Tennessee. Creates good catch angles. Has a great catch radius. Not as consistent as you’d like to see. Struggles to catch through contact.
Offers some serious RAC ability. Very explosive and has solid field vision. Offers some contact balance downfield as well, can shrug off some contact. Ball security might be an issue, as he struggles to move the ball to the sideline side at times. Average run blocker. Was utilized well as a screen blocker, flashed ability to open a lane.
What we want to see from Velus Jones Jr in Mobile
- We’d like to see Velus Jones Jr show better nuances throughout his routes. He ran a relatively limited route tree at Tennessee, and you’d like to see him understand positioning and other such things better. As long as he doesn’t go into Mobile and try to rely on his speed, he should make a very positive impression in 1v1’s.
Pre-Senior Bowl projection
Velus Jones Jr best projects into a spread offense as a #2 “Z” receiver option to compliment the main boundary receiver. Jones works well both on the perimeter and out of the slot and would be a good fit in most NFL offenses. We think he could be a full time starter by year two if all goes well, and could potentially be in the Pro Bowl at some point of his career.
We like Jones as a 4th/5th round projection. His speed will certainly help him with determining value, but his route-running ability will be the deciding factor on how high he goes. Will he learn all the little things to it?
