Trey McBride was very well utilized in his college system as a versatile chess piece. McBride was used as a possession receiver, wide out, H-back, and even as a fullback and excelled in those roles. Trey was a three-sport talent in high school, still holding his high school’s career records in points scored (basketball), home runs, and runs batted in. He is simply an athletic freak of nature and a generally interesting person.

Trey McBride Scouting Report

Very lumbery athlete. Lacks the athleticism that we have seen from most top-end prospects at the position. Very much a north/south style of runner. Will fight his way through contact rather than move through space. Very gritty player. Very strong upper body. Doesn’t accelerate very well. Lacks general explosiveness. Not a dynamic athlete.

Not a crisp route runner, but he’s consistent. Doesn’t show the choppy footwork but simply rounds into his break. Was asked to run a lot of routes in the new Addezio scheme. Shows some good, soft hands. Doesn’t have any real reason to bring ball security concerns.

Excellent catch radius. Very consistent receiver. Very much a vertical threat down the field. Won’t offer very much in a jump ball situation. Catches very well through contact and in congestion. Very solid downhill blocker. Devastating on the perimeter.Attacks the defender very well. Wide stance with his upper body while aligning his shoulders with his knees.

What we want to see from Trey McBride in Mobile

  • How does Trey McBride match up with NFL linebacker types? He oftentimes abused the linebackers in the Mountain West, and Colorado State didn’t often face NFL level linebackers. We’d like McBride to confirm that he is a mismatch against a linebacker during the week of practice at the Senior Bowl.

Pre-Senior Bowl projection

Trey McBride has excellent size and is too reliable as both a receiver and a blocker to go very deep into this draft. While his athleticism is still called to question, he is a valuable player immediately with his receiving ability, blocking prowess, and special teams coverage contributions.

We like McBride as a second/third-round prospect, and can fit in a wide variety of schemes. He’s going to go much higher than most people realize right now.
