Damone Clark Scouting Report

Has some serious speed. Great range. A very explosive athlete, excellent first step. Very strong upper body, can pick up ball carriers and sling them to the ground. Has some lower body strength to push back in a power rush against even interior blockers.

Not the most technical tackler but finds a way to get the job done. Delivers a powerful hit. I really like the way he cleans up attacking the chest. Has a tendency of missing tackles while in zone coverage. Struggles with wrapping up along the sideline. Typically takes excellent pursuit angles in space. Appears to be a true sideline to sideline player. Had a lot of trouble corralling Kelvin Harris when LSU played South Carolina. Pretty awesome blitz timing. Does well in space. Offers decent spy ability. Knows when to work up and into the play.

Not nearly as effective in man coverage. Struggles to stay with the receiver on a cut. Plays zone coverage well. Comes up and disrupts the route to take away the throw. Doesn’t react to a catch in his zone well. Probably needs to feel the depth of the zone better at times. Let’s things get over his head. Seems to recognize play concepts but can be a bit too aggressive. Seems to understand concepts a lot. Misses his assignment from time to time chasing eye candy. Doesn’t navigate through traffic as well as you’d like to see. Plays very aggressively which will pull him out of the play at times. Shows some ability to sense the route the receiver is running in his zone.

What we want to see from Damone Clark in Mobile

  • There isn’t too much that Damone Clark can show us during his week in Mobile. On the field, we want to see Clark play well in 1v1’s against the running backs and tight ends and show some ability to play in man coverage.
  • Off the field, we want to see Clark blow teams away with his football intelligence and personality.

Pre-Senior Bowl projection

We like Damone Clark as an inside, on-ball linebacker who projects best as a rangy box defender. Clark doesn’t do too well when asked to operate outside of the box consistently and as a result, would best fit in a 3-4 defense.

We like Clark right now as a 5th/7th round pick due to his lack of elite athleticism, lack of consistent tackling ability, and lack of coverage ability. He has upside in all three fronts and should be a backup for his first year or two in the league, perhaps even serving on the practice squad.
