Danny Gray is an intriguing prospect to consider. He’s flashed ability in several games to be a special possession-style receiver with his strong hands and ability to make catches that are frankly misplaced. However, the biggest question with Gray is where are his elite traits? He’s shown flashes, but he’s not a particularly strong RAC player nor is he a reliable deep threat. He’s not much of a run blocker, either. The biggest question is how does he project into an NFL offense and how will they use him?

Danny Gray Scouting Report
Speed doesn’t seem a top line. He will be good enough, but I think it will limit him a little bit at the next level. Accelerates well off the line of scrimmage. Slightly above average explosion. Solid footwork through his breaks. Smooth and crisp. Very nice wiggle. Ran a basic assortment of routes at SMU, nothing too deep. Doesn’t particularly show much of an understanding of his routes.
Wasn’t contested very often off of the release. Flashes a very impressive catch radius. Has shown the ability to make catches balls placed all over the spectrum. Not consistent with his radius. Very aware and can make grabs off of deflections. Doesn’t show much ability to make catches through contact. Limited deep threat ability.
Doesn’t show the speed or route nuance on deep concepts to outrun a secondary or consistently win positioning. Offers some RAC ability. Can make a move in space. Has solid field vision. Doesn’t show great contact balance or strength to continue to create. Not particularly strong as a run blocker. Doesn’t have great handwork and doesn’t show much effort in moving the defender. Struggles to get hands-on the defender with the proper angle.
What we want to see from Danny Gray in Mobile
- Consistency throughout the week. His biggest issue at SMU was consistency and that sometimes, the moment felt too big for him. We don’t want to see that in Mobile.
- How does Gray work through press coverage? He wasn’t often contested at SMU which leaves us to wonder how flexible is he working through his release. He will have some solid press cornerbacks to work against in 1v1’s and we should have a good idea by the end of the week.
Pre-Senior Bowl projection
Danny Gray best projects as a possession-style Z receiver at the next level with limited upside. I don’t know if Gray can ever be a starter in the NFL. We don’t believe he will be more than a depth player.
Gray really has no elite or defining trait. As a result, it’s difficult to see him getting drafted. We project Gray as a practice squad player who can fill in when injuries overwhelm a roster. We think he’s a Priority Free Agent with limited upside at the next level.
