The USFL is coming back! The former league from the 1980s that started the career of so many NFL players like Reggie White, Hershel Walker, Steve Young, and Jim Kelly is back, thanks to the efforts of the former Spring League general manager Brian Woods and FOX Sports.

The news was broken by the USFL News account on Twitter.

The eight teams identified by Colin Cowherd on The Herd are;

  • Birmingham Stallions
  • Houston Gamblers
  • Michigan Panthers
  • New Jersey Generals
  • New Orleans Breakers
  • Philadelphia Stars
  • Pittsburgh Maulers
  • Tampa Bay Bandits

There will be an eighth team that will be announced at a later time.

What can we expect from the USFL in 2022?

The USFL is playing very much to the same format that The Spring League took over the last three years. Eight teams will play in two four-team divisions with divisional playoffs for the top two teams at the end of the season. The regular season will be twelve weeks long, played from April through June and into July.

The season will be played in a single location in 2022, rumored to be Birmingham, Alabama. Currently, plans are for teams to begin playing in their markets in 2023.

The chosen strategy for the markets that have been chosen thus far is interesting, modeling much after the rebranded XFL’s inaugural 2020 season. Five of the markets chosen have NFL teams. An argument can be made for a sixth as both the New York Giants and the New York Jets play in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
