Michigan State vs Ohio State is coming up this Saturday, and is one of the most important games of the season. Both teams are 9-1, both are trying to make a case for the playoffs despite taking uncharacteristic losses this year, and they are ranked second and first in the Big Ten East respectively.

Like the SEC West, the top of the Big Ten East is known for having a murderer’s row of elite teams competing each year to make the conference championship. This year, that battle could very well come down to this game.

OSU is a big favorite for a team facing a top 10 opponent, but is Vegas justified in counting out the Spartans?

Predication: Can tOSU Get A Dominant Top 10 Win?

Let’s make something clear; Michigan State is a pretty good team to be an 18.5 point underdog in this one. The voters in the AP Poll agree with that, as MSU is ranked number 7 in the country and is only 2 spots behind their opponent.

And as many critics have brought up when arguing against Ohio State’s high rankings this season, the Buckeyes haven’t been the most dominant team during their wins against good opponents.

They did get blowout margins against some of the Big Ten’s lower competition such as Rutgers, Maryland, and Indiana. But they only beat Penn State by 9 and Nebraska by the same margin.

The close margin against Penn State looks less impressive when you account for the Nittany Lions’ disappointing season. They’re 6-4 this year and have significant problems on the offensive line and in their running game. For that matter, they lost to Illinois not long before playing Ohio State.

MSU also has a Heisman level player in Kenneth Walker III, who is coming off performances of 197, 146, and 143 yards in his last three games. He had an insane 5 touchdowns against Michigan a few games back. It’s likely that Walker’s presence will at least keep this one close, even if the Spartans don’t come away with the upset.

Prediction: Michigan State +18.5

  • Both teams average 80.9 points per game combined, 12.4 points higher than the over/under.
  • Ohio State has failed to cover the spread the week before the Michigan game for 7 straight seasons.
  • Ohio State’s offense averages 106 more yards (550) than the Michigan State defense gives up per game (444). They are 6-4 against the spread when gaining over 444 yards.
